Experience

David focuses his law practice on personal injury and criminal defense cases. His plaintiff’s personal injury work includes product liability, car wrecks and accidents, slip and fall, medical malpractice, and wrongful death cases. He is also experienced in state and federal criminal defense for cases including murder, drug offenses, kidnapping, burglary, robbery, fraud and forgery, sex crimes (including multiple cases defending child pornography offenses), driving while intoxicated, arson, battery, wire fraud, white collar crimes and most offenses under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

David is an experienced trial lawyer and certified mediator.  In 2010, David became a Certified Mediator and is frequently retained by lawyers across Northern Indiana as a civil mediator and arbitrator.  

In 2019 David successfully completed Capital Defense Training and is considered “qualified trial counsel” under Indiana Rule of Criminal Procedure 24 and can be appointed as co-counsel in cases where the government seeks the death penalty.

 

Additional Information
For over 20 years David has been a LaPorte County Deputy Public Defender.  Although a public defender, he is also available to be privately retained for those who do not qualify for a public defender.

He is currently the Chief Deputy Public Defender representing defendants charged with felonies.  From 1996 to 2015 he primarily defended felony charges in the LaPorte Circuit Court. Beginning in 2016 he is defending felony cases in LaPorte Superior Court #1.

He is also a Criminal Justice Act Panel Attorney (Northern District of Indiana; South Bend Division) representing defendants charged with federal crimes in federal court.  He has represented defendants charged with drug crimes, conspiracy, wire fraud, kidnapping and ransom, gun and firearms charges as well as child pornography cases.

David currently serves as the Criminal Justice Act Panel Attorney Representative for the Northern District of Indiana.

Admissions & Memberships

David is admitted in State of Indiana, Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, the Western District of Michigan and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

A Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation, David is also a member of the La Porte County Bar Association, Indiana Bar Association, American Bar Association and Seventh Circuit Bar Association (General Chair – Committee on Technology).

He is also a member of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, Indiana Public Defender Council, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and American Association for Justice (Criminal Law Section Executive Committee; Chair 2012; Past Newsletter Editor).

Since 2014 David has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern District of Indiana Federal Community Defenders.  From 2015 through 2019 David served as secretary of the Federal Community Defenders.  Since 2019 David has served as President of the Federal Community Defenders.

David is a member of the Northern District of Indiana Local Rules Committee (2018-Present).

David has been consistently selected by his peers to be included in The Best Lawyers in America (2008 to 2020). He is listed as one of “Indiana’s Top Lawyers” in Indiana Business Magazine (2008 and 2009). He has also been listed in Super Lawyers (2013 – 2016). He earned the highest possible Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating (AV) for legal ability and professional ethics.

David is a Life/Endowment/Patron member of the National Rifle Association, Life Member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a Life Member of the Union Mills Conservation Club.
