The Economic Development Corporation Michigan City (EDCMC) has engaged Newby Lewis Kaminski & Jones, LLP (NLKJ) to provide legal counsel to the EDCMC as necessary. The EDCMC is responsible for the City of Michigan City for handling tax incentives, conducting project negotiations with businesses relocating to Michigan City or existing businesses securing expansion within the City of Michigan City. NLKJ would provide legal guidance for the EDCMC on the preparation of documents that may be presented to perspective clients or government bodies in conjunction with economic development projects.
Most recently, NLKJ has reviewed tax abatement applications, processes, and resolution templates for the EDCMC that are used as incentives for businesses relocating or expanding in Michigan City. “Ensuring that we are following the legal guidelines for everything we do is a top priority for us (EDCMC) and for the City of Michigan City. Having NLKJ as counsel will assist us in creating a fair and equitable process,” said EDCMC Executive Director, Clarence Hulse.
NLKJ attorneys James Kaminski and Anthony Novak will act as primary counsel to the EDCMC. Both attorneys have extensive background in working with both the public and private sectors on issues including property tax, zoning, and the sale or purchase of real estate. “Our firm (NLKJ) is happy to provide services to the EDCMC as needed to help them in their efforts to grow business in Michigan City as well as La Porte County,” said James Kaminski, a managing partner at NLKJ.
